Music Copyright

Complicated Copyright

Many musicians encounter the intimidation of law, making music is an art and art can be very abstract . How can something that had been born inside someones head be unique and not anything like other people work. Law that relates to someone craft happens to be one of the most complex of law.

Law is protecting, but what?

The area of law that most impacts music is copyright.  While most musicians have surely heard the term copyright before, what is it exactly? Copyright protects various forms of creative  expression that are fixed in a tangible form. But in reality there is two forms of creativity that is protected by the law and are the most frequently envolved: musical works and sound recordings. That means that ownership of musical works are the authors alone, but when recording/releasing a song on a lable, the label recieives a copyright and a right to sell the work.

Authors rights

As the owner of a copyright, you are granted certain exclusive rights. These include the right to reproduce the copyrighted work, to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work, to distribute copies of the copyrighted work to the public, to perform the copyrighted work publicly (note that this does not apply to sound recordings), to display the copyrighted work publicly, and in the case of sound recordings, to perform the copyrighted work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission.

Reality

In reality due to complexity of law enforcement many authors suffer from work theft. Really trendy way to advertise you work on youtube if it is a beat, to post it on "free for profit" terms. But even posted as free for profit beat some artist can run into trouble on monetizing they work , when beat author claims they Copyright rights. But overall the author releasing a "free for profit" is determining the "free for profit" terms, i.e. can be used on youtube "free for profit.

Conclusion

Copyright protects someones intellectual property and copyright is good until it serves in a good way and do not get used to claim other people profit.
